Biography

Dr. Haroon Zafar is a Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) and Enterprise Ireland Investigator at the National University of Ireland (NUI) Galway. He is a Co-Founder and Academic Lead for Cardiovascular Research and Innovation Centre Ireland. He is also an Adjunct Lecturer in Bioinnovate Ireland and College of Engineering and Informatics at NUI Galway. Dr. Zafar graduated with a B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering in 2007. He received his first M.Sc. degree in Photonics from the University of St Andrews and Heriot Watt University Edinburgh, UK. He received his second M.Sc. Engineering degree in Photonics from the Ghent University and the University of Brussels (VUB), Belgium in 2011. He was awarded a PhD in Biophotonics (Biomedical Physics) from NUI Galway, for research in development and applications of optical imaging techniques for microcirculation and cardiovascular imaging. To date, Dr. Zafar has published more than 40 peer-reviewed journal articles in internationally-respected journals such as Nature-Oncogene (impact factor (IF): 7.52), Journal of the American College of Cardiology (IF: 19.9),  International Journal of Cardiology (IF: 6.19), Nanomedicine (IF: 4.73), Annals of Biomedical Engineering (IF: 3.22), Stem Cell Research and Therapy (IF: 4.50), Journal of Biomedical Optics (IF: 2.53). His published articles were featured in RTE News(Irish National Channel), OCT News and Advances in Engineering, Canada. He has over 20 peer-reviewed/refereed  conference publications/proceedings and presented his work at several renowned and top international platforms such as SPIE BiOS (USA), EuroPCR (Paris), PIERS. Dr. Zafar is the recipient of several prestigious research grants, awards and fellowships including the Science Foundation Ireland/Enterprise Ireland “Technology Innovation Development Award”, Enterprise Ireland “Innovation Partnership” grant, Irish Research Council (IRC) “Postdoctoral Fellowship” and “New Foundations” Grant (twice), the Hardiman Research Fellowship from NUI Galway, the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship from European Union. He also won several best paper and travel awards such as the ‘Key Scientific Article Certificate’ by Advances in Engineering, Canada, SPIE (The International Society for Optics and Photonics, USA) travel award, Optics in Cardiology (Switzerland & Netherlands) best paper award. He was the founding president of the NUI Galway and University of Limerick, SPIE Student Chapter. In 2017, he also held a position as a Visiting Postdoctoral Scholar at the Ryerson University, Toronto, Canada funded through a New Foundations grant awarded by IRC. He has strong ties and linkages with renowned international academic/industrial collaborators. His research focuses on developing novel solutions and medical devices for unmet clinical needs, translational optical imaging and functional imaging for regenerative medicine.
